Schedule Reliability Increased 8.2% in October 2018

CargoSmart analyzes schedule reliability each month to provide shippers and logistics service providers with insights about their ocean carriers’ performance. This month, we reviewed the schedule reliability of 20 ocean carriers across 25 trade lanes. Overall, on-time schedule reliability increased by 8.2%, from 53.1% in September 2018 to 61.3% in October 2018.

This month, we added 12 trade lanes to our monthly analysis. We now include Africa-Middle East, Africa-North America, Africa-South America, Intra Africa, Intra Europe, Intra Middle East, Intra North America, Intra Oceania, Intra South America, North America-Middle East, North America-South America and South America-Oceania for trade schedule reliability, totally 25 trade lanes.

Reviewing schedule reliability by trade, 10 of the original 13 trades from last month’s analysis increased from September 2018 to October 2018. The Europe-Africa trade experienced the largest improvement in reliability, increasing by 53.8% from 12.5% in September 2018 to 66.3% in October 2018. The Transatlantic trade experienced the largest decrement in reliability, decreasing by 8.6%, from 66.6% in September 2018 to 58.0% in October 2018. The newly included Intra Middle East trade had the highest reliability among the 25 trades, with 85.1% reliability.

From the vessel discharging region perspective, the Asia region experienced the largest increment in reliability, increasing by 15.2%, from 48.9% in September 2018 to 64.1% in October 2018. The Oceania region had the highest reliability, with 67.0% reliability, while the North America region continued to have the lowest reliability, with 42.2% reliability, in October 2018. Starting this month, we will be grouping South Asia and Asia together for the reliability by port of discharging region.

All carriers experienced varying degrees of increasing schedule reliability from September 2018 to October 2018. The top five most reliable carriers in October 2018 were Safmarine, MCC, OOCL, ANL, and CMA CGM with an average on-time performance of 72.1%, 69.7%, 68.2%, 66.71%, and 66.68% respectively.
