Monthly Schedule Reliability Decreased to 53.1% in September 2018

CargoSmart analyzes schedule reliability each month to provide shippers and logistics service providers with insights about their ocean carriers’ performance. This month, we reviewed the schedule reliability of 20 ocean carriers across 13 trade lanes. Overall, on-time schedule reliability decreased by 7.8%, from 60.9% in August 2018 to 53.1% in September 2018.

Reviewing schedule reliability by trade, 11 of the 13 trades decreased from August 2018 to September 2018. The North America-Oceania trade experienced the largest decrement in reliability, decreasing by 30.2% from 86.1% in August 2018 to 56.0% in September 2018. The Asia-Africa trade experienced the largest improvement in reliability, increasing by 7.3%, from 53.7% in August 2018 to 61.0% in September 2018. The Europe-Middle East trade had the highest reliability among the 13 trades.<

Nearly all carriers experienced varying degrees of decreasing schedule reliability from August 2018 to September 2018. The top five most reliable carriers in September 2018 were Safmarine, OOCL, Wan Hai, CMA CGM, and Maersk with an average on-time performance of 67.0%, 59.3%, 58.2%, 57.9%, and 57.8% respectively.

Schedule Reliability for Q3 Lower in 2018 than in 2017

Taking a look back at the last month of the second quarter and the third quarter of 2018, the overall schedule reliability had a decreasing trend since June 2018, from 69.3% in June to 53.1% in September. Compared to the same period last year, the reliability also had a similar trend but decreased slightly from 70.1% in June 2017 to 64.3% in September 2017.

Reviewing the schedule reliability by carrier and the top five most reliable carriers in the third quarter of 2017 and 2018, we found that reliability for the top carriers in Q3 2018 was lower than in Q3 2017. We also found that the top performing carriers in Q3 2018 had a similar reliability, ranging from 65.2% to 68.3%. MCC, OOCL, and CMA CGM were in the top five in Q3 in 2017 and 2018. MCC had the highest monthly average reliability of 80.3% in Q3 2017 and went down to 65.9% in Q3 2018. Safmarine jumped into the top place this year with 68.28% reliability in Q3 2018. OOCL was closely after it with 68.27% reliability. ANL was new to the top five list this year with 65.2% reliability in Q3 2018.
